NEW TO PRIVATE LESSONS?
At JK Creative Practices, we do music differently. You are more than an instrument or a voice to us. You are a human capable of experiencing music in a holistic way. Music calls to us, reaches out to us, moves us. We understand that, and we teach from that concept. There is no "one-size-fits-all" mentality. We meet the individual where they are and move forward together from there. We support our students by nurturing their musical goals, whatever they may be.
How do I get started? We recommend starting out with a Music Consultation session so you can meet the teacher, discuss goals, pricing options and perhaps play or sing a bit. This way you as the student (or you and the student) and the teacher can get to know one another and see if you are going to be a good match. It is not an audition but a chance to meet and chat.
Can adults study private lessons? Yes yes yes!!! We welcome and encourage adult students. Kassy and James have experience working with adult musicians. It doesn’t matter if you are brand new or have studied in the past. We will take good care of you. You will not be treated like a child and you will not be given curriculum geared toward children.
How young can children begin private lessons? Instrumental students can begin as early as age 6. It really depends on the student. Keep in mind that our lessons are 45 minutes long. We will assess at the consultation if the student will be a good match. At JK Creative Practices, we choose to start with singers from age 12 and up. It’s not an issue of vocal safety (children can and should be singing under knowledgeable guidance). We just choose to start at that age.
Can I take lessons from the comfort of our own home? Yes! Our lessons are entirely virtual. We've perfected this process so you don't have to venture out into traffic in yet another trip across the city.

What do I need to provide for lessons?
- We recommend two devices for the lessons. One to use for the Zoom lesson and one for piano and karaoke tracts (especially for vocalists) Any combination of a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or phone works great!
- Vocalists - theory and sight singing books (info provided by your teacher after the consultation) a straw, a 3-ring binder, a water bottle, a pencil.
- Instrumentalists - books (your teacher will recommend them) a notebook and pencil. You MUST bring your books to every lesson. We do not keep a spare set of books on hand at the studio. You will need to have a piano or keyboard of some sort at home. Talk to your teacher about recommendations that fit your budget.
