PRACTICE MAKES PRACTICE
The pictures we see of the sitting yogi high in the Himalayas meditating in utter serene bliss bring an expectation that we are able to stay in that state forever. But what is the truth? I have meditated for over thirty years and my head space is often more like a rave than the picture of tranquility described above. It is for this very reason that I started meditating to begin with. My mind is like a tornado, constantly whirring, coming up and going down, tearing from one thing to another at a speed that can only be associated with warp 10...engage.
I would like to be able to say that when I meditate, I instantly settle in, but this is not true. It takes time and sometimes I never do settle in. I have, however, learned to sit with whatever is there and observe. When, as inevitably happens, I catch my mind wandering off, I gently and compassionately (well, most of the time) bring it back and start watching again.
Meditation is a practice. Over time you get better at it and it does bring you to a calmer, less reactive state. It is never perfect and that is a good thing because neither are its practitioners. The best we can hope is that we will get better at it each and every time we sit on the mat.
To that end we have decided that it is time for a Foundational Series in meditation at the Soul’s Song. This will be a four week ½ hour series right before our Sunday Healing Yoga. What a perfect way to develop your practice, begin your week and find out a little bit about yourself in the process. Join us Sundays March 15-April 5 from 5:15-5:45pm. Cost is $25 for members and $30 for guests/non-members. Sign up using this link.
